Let the holidays begin
The clock ticks, and I can't wait to get back home and just relax and count myself lucky for having completed this semester. I'm so impatient, but I'll have to wait since the exams will mark the ultimate homestretch. Now this has been a long expedition dating back to september last year. It has been a marvelous time at school, both with friends and foes. This academic year was decorated with so much activity. It started on a high note with eight units to cover and honestly it's been the busiest period i've ever witnessed since I joined campus. Lots of assignments and those random quizes, for those who know what i'm talking about. I also can't forget to mention the elevated complexity of courses taken this time round. New tuitors on the block too, now it really takes time to adjust to their tact and get in their good books. Its been long and tedious having to put up with classes nearly each day of the week, starting as early as 7AM or 8AM. We literally had two to three lectures from Monday to Thursday leaving us only with Fridays to spare. The first semester was somewhat relaxed with lots of extra carriculur activities. Playing for my school in the national rugby league contributed significantly to my leisure time. We did superbly well only to concede defeat when the league was down to the wire. Well, it's clearly not the end of the road because theres still a chance in the coming season which coincides with the opening dates as per the school's calendar. Student elections were held and this time I participated than never before. Being part of the electoral team was indeed a priviledge and something commendable. The polls were conducted peacefully and my friend Bill emerged victorious as anticipated. Away from the polls there was the Tamasha festival too. Now this is some sort of a fiesta where the entire university and the neighbouring society converge to celebrate heritage, culture and talents. But in recent times it has become more of a student's thing with little or no involvement of the outsiders. It is basically a talent show and a time of merriment in campus. It's a platform used by the university to identify talents among students and award those who merit. The extravaganza runs for a week but mostly commences on wednesdays and the curtains usually come down on Sundays. Now the first semester came to an end in April but not in the same manner it had began. The school had to be closed indefinitely due to student unrest. The irate students protested against the stiff regulations put in place by the administration. The controversy sorrounding fees payment and issuance of exam cards being the bone of contention. The students engaged cops in running battles and worst still rubbed shoulders the wrong way with local boda boda operators, who offer commuter services in town and its sorroundings. This would prove to be fatal as these boda boda operators retaliated by hurting a number of comrades. Rumour has it that fatalities were recorded but I cant give out the exact figures since I hav'nt verified any of that information, and so it remains pure hearsay. The second semester began with students sitting the aborted exams and it has fairly been a long one. Not much of extra carriculur activities but intense academics. There were riots too but this time the students chanelled their complains to the county commisioner following the alleged increase of fee by the ministry. This was called for nationally by the student leaders union and served its purpose. Otherwise its been a great semester having fun with friends. I spent most of my weekends either watching or playing rugby, skating, swimming, going out on hikes and outings. I'll miss the good times but looking foward to better times next academic year. Wishing all my friends a nice time and prosperous holiday till we meet again in November.
