Dala sevens weekend

Lets just say it's terribly hard not to talk about certain things. The weekend is meant for relaxation and  merriment, as we take a brief break from the daily routine of waking up and getting busy all day at work. Now my weekends are often pre occupied with lots of activities, but it's almost inevitable for me to miss out on a rugby gig especially when it's within the vicinity. It's indeed amazing how rugby has gained immense popularity, almost dwarfing football which is traditionally considered the people's game here in kenya. This years dala  sevens was not as impressive at least according to what I had personally expected. It was just but a miserable letdown, I've been lucky enough to attend the past editions but I must admit that this particular event did not live up to my expectations. I just don't seem to understand why the tournament had to be hosted at Kisumu showground in the first place. The venue is a bit far from the CBD and you'll have to cover just about 5 kilometres to get there. The unpredictable jams in Kisumu will send you crawling for several minutes before you get to the venue. Secondly the division two matches were not played on the same venue, in very unclear circumstances. These matches were played at Kisumu polytechnic and attracted spectators as well though not in big numbers. Traditionally both Division one and the second tier matches of division two are played at the same venue. In certain special cases only the preliminaries of division two matches are played elsewhere, but the finals are played on the same venue as division one.  You need to realize that sevens rugby is a very quick game of just fourteen minutes and so you should'nt leave the spectators waiting for hours between matches. This can only be achieved by having both divisions in the same venue, much like what we see in Prinsloo tournament and the former Dala sevens. Thirdly Dala sevens did not attract the usual crowd the way it usually does. This is debatable because I may not have the figures but my argument is based on personal observation. This could be so because of obvious reasons, two of which i've clearly stated. Blame it on the recent tournaments that have hit the airwaves and sent the social media into a frenzy. Masaku sevens and partly Kabeberi sevens are to blame for the negative reputation of these rugby tournaments. Most people now tend to associate rugby with all form of evil as shown by the paparazzi. My criticism ends there and point out on a few good things. The tournament ended a bit early which is commendable given that certain teams have to cover great distances. Though I have constantly loathed the idea of the Kisumu showground, I must say that it's a bit more organized though not expansive enough to accomodate two rugby fields. Anyway the action went down and KCB once more proved their dominion by beating Homeboyz rfc. Other matches were equally interesting, as usual though the grounds were a bit soggy and messy. Looking forward to the next tournament. Kwaheri.
