Still invincible half the journey
With first leg done our thoughts are bent on the second leg, cecafa and other domestic cup competitions. The green army matches on, defiant and unscathed. We can afford to burn bridges because at this point in time we are the ones calling the shots and our aim is to finish the league unbeaten. Football afficionados would tell you that some of the finest clubs you see in the world today are nowhere close to achieving such honours. It takes not only great perfomance in the field but a great deal of discipline and sportsmanship to become unassailable. Many still resonate well with the kogallo squad which went unbeaten in the Kenya premier league back in 1976, so lets just say things can still go according to plan, afterall it's the same league, the same clubs, just a bunch of new players. The local football scene here in Kenya has seen a titanic facelift over the years, the league today is far much better than what it was some years ago, so much that it has attracted attention worldwide thanks to supersport. With such upgrades, more challenges are to be anticipated as well, which include more funding, improvements in facilities and better management structures among others. But most importantly the league gets more competitive with each passing season which will provide a steady life force for the national team. The league has jelled to be one of the best in Africa and commands a large fanbase both within and beyond the African borders but one club outshines the others in nearly all aspects. Gor mahia has won the premier league back to back i.e in 2012-2013 and of course 2013-2014 seasons. The club is on track to securing their third successive title in three seasons, reminiscent of Man united during Ferguson's reign. Even though the club failed to impress in the continental assignments, they have dominated the domestic league having not lost a single match. The insatiable urge to score has seen the club sitting cosy at the summit. The lack of funds led to logistical challenges as the club had to solicit funds from other avenues in order to honour CAF matches in other countries. This could be attributed to poor management which ultimately led to the lacklustre performance though other factors came into play as well. The resurgence of Gor began with the appointment of the Croat tactician Logarusic and since then the club has reclaimed a commanding position in the league, it's ideal space. In 2011-2012 season the club lost the league by a whisker having been held to a barren draw by Thika United on the very last day of the league. The team is composed of seasoned players both from Kenya and from neighbouring countries as well. It is basically a dream team in a mundane league as their style of play is unlike anything in the league. The club has a far superior goal difference let alone the points and has conceded the least number of goals as well. The facts can only reveal two key strengths of the club, a potent firepower and a formidable defense line. The goals have always come through thanks to the trio of Olunga, Kagere and Abondo who share among themselves over 95% of goals. They have constantly tormented defenders and always seem to score at will. The return of maestro Rama Salim and Danny Ssenkuruma means the manager will clearly be spoilt for choice on picking his starting side. The latter was the Kenya premier league top scorer and key force behind the team's stellar performance last season. Well it seems once you are in the green army you remain a green commando and the club will always welcome back all the prodigal sons. The pair could soon play in the second leg of the league and this will immensely bolster the club's league cup ambitions. The club seems to possess all the strengths of other clubs and none of their weaknesses, this is so evident as the opponents are always disoriented and outclassed on all fronts. The prospects of going unbeaten remain very much alive unless other clubs craft ways of bringing down the green army. I expected Sofapaka or Ingwe or perhaps Ulinzi to stop the juggernaut but damn these clubs didn't even scare. Infact they did little to withstand the onslaught of Kogallo, and i have no reason at all to believe they will pose the slightest threat to the champions come second leg (lets be candid here). Should kogallo maintain such a steady run, then chances of losing are quite remote. What most people don't know is that the club has weathered the storm of financial difficulties and received so much hype and recognition whilst other cash strapped clubs have continued to plummet, a notable culprit being AFC Leopards. Being a huge fan i'd expect to see the players offered huge bonuses and allowances because the club is not truly broke as hearsay paints it. Signing top players like Meddie Kagere, nzgiimana, Olunga and Walusimbi is not the hardest thing but retaining such calibre of players is a tall order for a club like Kogallo. These players use the domestic league as a platform to market their talent and subsequently follow leads to foreign countries especially to European clubs who monitor the league scouting for players. Most times their hopes of establishing themselves in those leagues flop and they are forced to return home and start from scratch. This should not be the case, since we can provide decent salary and retain our players. The only remedy is to pay well and invest in projects that offer high returns to the club, because the club already has a reputation and a huge following. I have to reiterate that going unbeaten in the first leg and opening an eleven point gap is truly a priceless gift to the fans. Am truly elated by the style of play the club has adopted and overly impressed by Kagere's antics, his spectacular goal against Top fry nakuru should be the best in the league's history. Credit to Oluoch for keeping ten clean sheets, he might want to consider keeping it spotless for the remainder of the season. The league is far from over but almost over considering how hard these lads have worked. The league looks as though it's divided into two distinct fronts, that of kogallo and the rest, we are truly revolutionaries standing on the front line.
