Ingoo sevens frenzy
A typical kenyan gig to precise, not any different from the safaricom sevens series which run across the country. There was indeed great anticipation that this event would be a big breakthrough as this was the first ever. Kakamega is so very much endowed with rugby talent, you all have heard of kakamega high School, western bulls and elite players like Humphrey Khayange, Collins Injera and of course the ever jim-dandy Davis Chenge. Kakamega county has a number of stadia that can comfortably host local rugby tournaments and a huge rugby fanbase, but its not clear why safaricom has never paid any keen interest in incoporating the region in the sevens series. Kakamega showground is slowly becoming the home of rugby in this county. Late last year there was Kabras 10s at the same venue, and suprisingly Nakuru rfc, Kisumu rfc and Kericho graced the tournament though the attendance was disappointing given the free entry. This particular tournament did well than critics had projected and i think sooner or later ingoo sevens will firmly appear in Kenya Rugby Union Calendar. Well, to begin with, the tournament failed to attract top tier teams like Nakuru rfc the Kenya cup defending champions, Kenya harlequins popularly called quins, Nondies rfc and Homeboyz rfc among others. This can clearly be attributed to the fact that the event is not in the Kenya Rugby Union calendar and of course the looming saba saba controversy dashed any hopes of having such participants. The third theory could be the prize money which was merely kes100, 000. The prize money does'nt come any close to the money awarderd in other countrywide competitions where winners bag over a million shillings and other valuable accolades. I don't intend to discredit anyone or criticize but am taking a meticulous opinion of the possibility of organizers lacking the financial muscle to offer more cash prize. Maybe things would get better as time unfolds and we'll have more established clubs taking part in the future. Most teams that participated were local teams, predominantly from western Kenya but University of Eldoret also had their players showcasing their prowess in the game of rugby. The tournament commenced on saturday and the curtains went down on Sunday, bringing an end to a vibrant all rugby weekend. It was indeed distinct in a way since the venue itself is concealed deep in the forest, you would'nt even know theres any rugby action in town unless you were informed. It was pomp and colour and there were lots of beautiful girls who flocked the grounds. The drinks kept flowing, all sorts of rum and the local "busaa" drink. There was pretty much anything you could eat ranging from local cuisines and fresh roast meat from the bone, something we all like, don't tell me you don't. There was a much bigger crowd on saturday than Sunday but that did'nt spoil the party whatsoever. Kabras rfc went on to clinch the title as expected, the final was'nt much of a contest as Kabras clearly dominated the game and so easily overhelmed their opponents by an unassailable margin. Kakamega rfc which proved a force to reckon with throughout the tournament came in third after an immense tussle with Sigalagala polytechnic. We Kenyans are accustomed to partying after the game and the night was embraced with so much vigour and energy. Loud music filled the air, music emanating from cars in the open fields transformed the seldom noisy grounds into a busy street. There was little visibility the only light being relied upon were car headlamps in the vicinity and that would only mean more mischief. The severely intoxicated party animals never had enough, hypnotized by the alcohol they created a spectacle. The night got the best of me and I left a little early but I believe my departure was of no effect at all as i could still hear the music and wild screams late in the night. All in all Ingoo sevens was the ideal place to be over the weekend.
The show was'nt devoid of security as there was heavy deployement of police officers just incase of anything unusual. It was little masaku in Kakamega. If you were there or not make an effort of attending Dala sevens in kisumu theres alot more in the offing.
